At first the thought of balancing a dirt bike’s wheels seems a bit unnecessary, until you ride a bike that has had this done.

After that every bike you own will have its wheels balanced.

Here’s a couple of examples:

Example 1: (Bike 09 KTM 450 exc (Rimlock and valve on same side of wheels as supplied)
We balanced the front and back wheels then went out on the open road for a short transport to were we ride, the bike was well behaved, smooth and we reached speeds up to around 90 kmh almost a pleasure to ride (if you like roads).

We returned straight away and removed the weights, we did it this way so there was no delay caused by balancing the wheels and the bike could be ridden back to back, we then rode the same stretch of road in the same direction.

This time the bike was horrible to ride, bouncing on the front end so bad that on one corner it nearly left the road, you wouldn’t believe it was the same bike we found ourselves trying to keep the speed down as much as possible because we just couldn’t trust the bikes handling.
We know that when riding on dirt you don’t feel this unbalance but it will definitely be having an effect on the bikes handling when riding fast.

Example 2: (Bike 08 Yamaha WR450 (Rimlock and valve opposite on front and twin opposing rimlocks on rear as supplied)

We thought that as the weight bias was partially offset on this bike that there wouldn’t be much difference by balancing the wheels. We were wrong.

We did exactly the same as we did with the KTM above and although we only needed to use one small weight on each wheel, the results were almost the same. The difference was like riding a different bike, the Yam wasn’t as nasty with no weights on but not as much as you would think and the improvement was just as impressive.

SO NEXT TIME YOU ARE GOING ON A RIDE WITH FAST SECTIONS REMEMBER IT COULD BE A LOT MORE ENJOYABLE WITH YOUR WHEELS BALANCED

A KTM rear balanced

When you get new tyres fitted to your car you get the wheels balanced so your car doesn’t behave like a shopping trolley or vibrate itself to bits. This is the same principle as the Terra- x brass wheel weights.

During most rides there will be a mix of riding including fast dirt or road transport sections. These fast sections are where your rimlocks are trying to bust out of the tyre and smack you in the butt and/or your handlebars are noticeably bouncing up and down. This is not fun, wears you out and your ride is much more pleasant without it. This problem is more pronounced if you have your valve stem on the same side as the rimlock like most enduro riders set their bikes up and some new bikes come these days.

Once you get rid of the unbalance you will !
